Originally begun in 1967 as a project of the Greenwich Junior League, The Grace Notes, a women's volunteer a cappella singing group, has become an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the joy of music to Greenwich and its surrounding communities. The group performs at nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, civic events, elementary schools, senior gatherings, and special events.
In past years, The Grace Notes were well-known for their children's shows at the Greenwich Library's Cole Auditorium and their traditional holiday-time commuter serenade at the Greenwich Railroad Station. They have also staged benefit performances at Greenwich High School, the Palace Theater in Stamford with The Nylons, and cabaret-style shows featuring solos, duets and small groups, as well as large company numbers. They have sung the National Anthem at Shea Stadium before a Mets game, been featured on Connecticut's local television station, and recorded a spot on the morning show Good Morning America. In 1990 and 1992, they had the ultimate privilege of performing at the White House during the Christmas season. Every spring, they join nine other a cappella singing groups at a music festival known as "Spring Sing."
About Our Music
The Grace Notes' broad musical repertoire includes songs from the Broadway stage, movies, old and new popular songs, spirituals, international folk songs, classical, and religious music. Almost all arrangements are written specifically for The Grace Notes, largely by local arrangers, including Cormac Bluestone, Alexander Constantine, David Johnson, Jon Hunt, Helen Bingamen, and Eileen Laurence.
A Little More About Us
Under the direction of Eric Martin, our musical director, conductor, arranger, teacher, and musician par excellence, The Grace Notes rehearse weekly as a full company. The group usually troupes in smaller groups of six to eight so as to reach more audiences. Sending quartets to visit homebound seniors is something we find particularly rewarding. Here, close individual contact is possible and there invariably are humorous and touching exchanges which reflect the true meaning of The Grace Notes as a therapeutic music group.
We sing during the academic school year (fall, winter, and spring), primarily in the daytime, in communities throughout southwestern Connecticut and Westchester, NY.
The Grace Notes are also available for hire to sing at private parties.
